The right wetsuit starts with water temperature, not air temperature. As East Coast water cools from the summer 80s into fall and winter, most Lowcountry surfers move from a springsuit into a 3/2mm, then a 4/3mm for cold snaps, and a 5/4mm hooded suit in the dead of winter. Wherever you paddle out, from Folly Beach, Cocoa Beach, and New Smyrna in the Southeast to the Outer Banks, Virginia Beach, Montauk, and Narragansett up the East Coast, or San Diego, Santa Cruz, Ocean Beach, and the Oregon coast out West, the right thickness comes down to your local water temperature. West Coast lineups tend to run colder year-round, so a 4/3 or 5/4 is the norm, while Southern California sits in 3/2 range most of the year.
